This Friday I will be participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement bringing attention to the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people and their allies.

My deliberate silence echoes that silence felt by so many, caused by anti-LGBT bullying, name-calling and harassment. I believe that ending the silence and stimulating conversations around it is the first step toward building awareness and making a commitment to address these injustices.

Our voice is such a powerful thing, and to far too many it remains an untapped power. The words that stream from our mouths are filled with both overt and hidden meaning and power. And the power of the words we choose to use is one which no one can take from us.

This Friday, think about the voices you are not hearing. And for every day, think about how you use your voice and what you will say or not say with it.

Consider what ONE day of silence means to you and then consider what it would be like to feel that silence every day….

The one hour documentary dives into the personal, cultural, and political impact of gay men raising children themselves. Conservatives regard them the very antithesis of family, and many believe having a mother is an essential part of a child’s development. The list of countries restricting international adoption by single men or gay couples is rapidly expanding, and many states are outlawing gay adoption altogether. Just last year, Utah and Mississippi joined Florida in banning gay adoption. DADDY & PAPA explores the value of alternative households, and the changing face of the American family.
