Has It Come To This?: Thoughts from the Jaded

I am a woman with a love for all things true, and in truth all things beautiful. I am a woman with a love for style. I am also, like all people, a contradiction. My brother shared this quote with me once:

Everybody is a contradiction of themselves and not only is that not a problem, it’s a beautiful thing. People should be contradictions. If you’re not, it means you’re not evolving or becoming a better person.” – Justin Vernon

This is going to sound so dull, but I’ve been finding myself in a serious shopping lull lately. And I’ve been questioning why. I know, I know, so big deal. I should be glad I’m spending less money. True, I am. But I’m also curious as to why my urge to shop has slowly subsided.

Strangely enough, I’ve even been forcing myself onto shopping websites to tempt the urge, but to no avail. I know it seems counterproductive. Why try and tempt yourself? But somehow I knew efforts would be fruitless.

I have questioned whether fashion is just at a lull right now, if we are waiting for something new to break through. But still I find myself tired of the trends. Maybe I have outgrown fashion to some extent. Maybe I have just seen beyond the addiction that often comes with it. Maybe it is no longer so “fulfilling” for me as it once was.

Maybe witnessing the constant pursuit of “a unique sense of style” in a commercially manipulated world has made me jaded. My lull has been going deeper than just shopping though. It has made it’s way into my own closet at home. Every time I clean out my room, I find more pieces I deem nonessential, more ways to cut back my wardrobe. I am realizing more and more the unimportance of it all (sad words to say for a lover of style).

So far, all that I can make of my lull is this- It frustrates me when I see competition in beauty. Instead of finding love and freedom through our expression of style, people use it to create status. What chick looks the baddest, whose shoe game is the illest, who’s got the most exclusive, who’s got the unreleased ….. Who cares? Really though.

I mean, why do you care? You may have those shoes on today, and you may think you’re the first person to rock them. Guess what? You’re probably not, and even if you are, some girl is going to roll up wearing them on the side of you tomorrow, and you’re going to be salted. Why? Because you want to be number one? Sorry dear, but that battle is a waste of time.
